Malcolm is a 7-year-old boy living in a low-income housing development. He and his four brothers and sisters live with their single mother, who works full-time and is attending night school to earn her degree. Malcolm and his siblings attended the summer program at the community center five days a week this summer. He struggles in school and tests below in reading and writing. His mother expressed concern that he would experience "summer brain drain" were he not working throughout the summer. He participated in the PenPals program. A youth from one community center was paired with a youth from another center of the same age and gender. The pair took turns exchanging letters throughout the summer, using writing prompts to craft their letters. At the beginning of the school year Malcolm was ready to read and learn and now has a new appreciation for time spend reading.
